Det Nye Norske Storband

Det Nye Norske Storband (The New Norwegian Big Band) is a professional big band made up of musicians in the early stages of their careers. The ensemble was founded by Henrik Smelhus Sjøeng in 2017 and has since delivered high-quality professional productions to a broad and diverse audience. The New Norwegian Big Band works to create stable and fair working conditions for young jazz and contemporary musicians, and to promote promising young composers through its projects.

The band is based primarily in Eastern Norway but presents productions throughout the country. In addition to being an innovative and creative ensemble offering high-level cultural experiences, the band brings together musicians who specialize in a wide range of musical styles. This gives the ensemble a distinctive sound while also enabling it to realize a broad variety of artistic projects. Over the years, the band has premiered new original Norwegian music, presented classic big band repertoire, and shared the stage with soloists such as Knut Riisnæs, Adam Rapa, and Siril Malmedal Hauge.

Each year, Det Nye Norske Storband produces between five and seven projects, resulting in around twenty concerts nationwide. The band’s next goal is to bring Norwegian rhythmic music to the international scene in the best possible way.
